Landscape Photography

Landscape photography is not that easy as it looks. It demands a selective visualization to isolate that part of nature, which is composed in a demonstrating beauty. We should have a painter's eye to and thorough knowledge of our equipment to record or omit the endless view of natural landscape beauty.

Study of lighting is the key factor. It is not in our control and to get the best result, we may have to wait till evening, or we may have to come to the spot next day early morning. We have to be at the right place at the right time.

All types of lenses are useful in this scenic landscape photography. A wide-angle lens is required to capture panorama and tele-lens to isolate details. Selection of the lens is purely subjective.

We may include a human figure in landscape photography, but a human figure should not dominate the composition of a landscape. If the person is identifiable, then the photograph goes in to personal album, or a snapshot, rather than an artistic approach. Human figure mainly brings life to the scenic beauty. It demonstrates the scale and gives emotional touch to a picture.

All rules of composition should be followed, but we should not hesitate to experiment for unexpected camera angles. Be sure to avoid any man-made objects in the frame like a light or an electric pole or wire fence. Frame the photograph with some objects on foreground (hanging some leaves from side or top or stone on ground) to create an illusion of depth. These objects in the foreground will be recorded with maximum saturation and distance objects will slowly loose contrast because of dust and mist in the atmosphere. Remember, human eye can see through dust and mist much better than a camera lens.

Sky-scape and flowing water also can be explored in landscape photography. However, we will need a camera stand, if we want to capture motion blur of flowing water.

Landscape photography is not a kind of restriction and can be blend with nature photography and wildlife photography. However, other branch is urban landscape. Modern cities provide endless opportunities to capture man made objects in artistic way. It also gives freedom to shoot after dusk, as illumination provided by the artificial lights are totally different approach that must be exploited.
